How to Engrave Seed Words Smoothly on a Stainless Steel Mnemonic Plate?
Stainless steel plates are often quite hard—how can you engrave clear and legible letters on them?
The tip of the stainless steel engraving pen is made of tungsten carbide. It is sharp, hard, and relatively fine. This type of tip allows you to engrave on stainless steel plates. However, if you try to engrave as if you're writing on paper, the result may not be ideal, because the technique for engraving on stainless steel is different from ordinary handwriting. For example, if you want to write the letter "L" on paper, you can simply write it like this:
But engraving doesn't work that way. Instead, you need to first outline the shape on the stainless steel surface, then repeatedly go over it to carve deeper, gradually creating a sunken groove. This results in a permanent mark that won't wear off over time.
If you try to “write” directly, like on paper, it’s often hard to produce visible results—especially because most mnemonic plates today use brushed stainless steel surfaces for a more refined and elegant finish. Look closely and you'll notice fine, directional lines on the surface.
If you scratch in the same direction as these lines, the mark can easily blend in and become nearly invisible, making it seem as though the surface is too hard to engrave. The correct method is to scratch back and forth in a direction perpendicular to the grain. Repeat over the same area several times—this will make the engraving much more visible and defined, as shown in the image below.

Letter stencil cards offer basic templates with fixed font shapes. While many letters can be easily shaded in—like the simple "L"—some others may be more challenging to fill uniformly. Still, with flexible use, stencils can help you form well-shaped letters and make them slightly bolder, all while keeping them clean and consistent. But that’s not the end—what you have now is just a shallow outline on the surface. You’ll need to follow the shape and apply more pressure to deepen the grooves, engraving the letters firmly into the mnemonic plate.This process may take some effort, but with a steady hand and a bit of patience, you’ll carve like a true engraving artist.
