How to Use a Binary Seed Phrase Backup Plate

This metal backup plate records each recovery word as a pattern of punched dots. Each row represents one word in your seed phrase, while the numbers across the top of the plate—2048, 1024, 512, and so on down to 1—show the value of each dot position.
Step 1: Find each word’s number
Look up each recovery word in the English BIP39 word list. Keep the words in their original order: the first word goes in row 1, the second word in row 2, and so on.
Use a word list numbered from 1 to 2048 for this plate. Some BIP39 references use indexes from 0 to 2047. If yours does, add 1 to the index before marking the plate.
Step 2: Convert the number into dot positions
Find which numbers printed across the top of the plate add up to your word’s number. Punch a dot under each of those numbers in the correct row. Leave the other positions unmarked.
For example, “adult” is word No. 31 in a BIP39 list numbered from 1:
31 = 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1
If “adult” is the first word in your recovery phrase, punch dots under 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1 in row 1.
You can ask an AI tool to convert a single word-list number, such as 31, into binary or into the values shown on the plate. Never enter your recovery words or full seed phrase into an AI tool. Before punching, add the suggested values yourself. Their total must equal that word’s BIP39 word-list number—31 in this example.
Step 3: Repeat and verify
Record each remaining word in its corresponding row. Use rows 1–12 for a 12-word recovery phrase, or rows 1–24 for a 24-word recovery phrase.
When finished, add the marked values in every row and look up each resulting number in the same BIP39 word list. Confirm that you recover every original word in the correct order before relying on the plate as your wallet backup.
Keep the completed plate private. Someone who can read its dot patterns may be able to reconstruct your recovery phrase.
