Precision Etched Metal Sealing Cover Plate
A precision etched metal sealing cover plate is manufactured using controlled chemical etching technology for applications requiring fine detail, clean edges, stable flatness, and accurate two-dimensional geometry. The process is especially suitable for thin stainless steel covers used in electronic packaging, optical equipment, sensing devices, and micro-assembly systems.
Compared with stamping, chemical etching does not require a hard stamping die and applies very limited mechanical force to the material. This reduces the risk of deformation, work hardening, and residual stress. When the process is properly controlled, the etched cover can be produced with burr-free edges and consistent fine features across the sheet.

Why Chemical Etching Is Preferred for Precision Sealing Covers
The decision to use chemical etching rather than stamping, laser cutting, or CNC machining is based on the specific requirements of the component. Etching offers distinct advantages when:
- The material is thin (below 0.3 mm)
- The design includes fine slots, holes, or complex profiles
- Flatness is critical
- Burr-free edges are required without secondary processing
- The part is still in design iteration
- Production volume does not yet justify stamping tooling
The absence of mechanical cutting force is particularly important for sealing applications. A cover with residual stress from punching or machining may warp after release from the sheet, after heat cycling, or during adhesive curing. The low-stress nature of chemical etching helps preserve the flatness and dimensional stability that sealing applications demand.
Design Rules for Etched Cover Plates
For precision etched parts, engineers should consider etch factor, undercut, isotropic etching behavior, minimum feature size, and aspect ratio during design. Chemical etching removes material laterally as well as vertically, so the relationship between line width, opening size, and material thickness must be reviewed before production.
Etch Factor and Dimensional Compensation
The etch factor is the ratio of vertical etch depth to lateral etch undercut. In an ideal anisotropic process, the etchant would remove material only in the vertical direction, producing perfectly straight sidewalls. In reality, the etchant attacks laterally as it penetrates, producing a characteristic tapered sidewall profile.
For a 0.1 mm thick stainless steel sheet, the lateral undercut on each side of a feature can be approximately equal to the material thickness, depending on process parameters. This means:
- A hole designed as 0.5 mm diameter in CAD may measure 0.6 mm or more after etching
- A slot designed as 0.3 mm wide may open to 0.5 mm
- A land between two openings may become narrower than intended
The phototool must therefore be compensated to account for the expected lateral etch. This compensation is not a fixed offset; it depends on material, thickness, etchant chemistry, temperature, and agitation conditions. The compensation value should be established and validated through process trials for each new design.
Minimum Feature Size and Aspect Ratio
The minimum feature size in chemical etching is related to material thickness. As a general engineering guideline:
- Minimum hole diameter: approximately 1.0 to 1.2 times material thickness
- Minimum slot width: approximately 1.0 times material thickness
- Minimum land width between openings: approximately 0.8 to 1.0 times material thickness
Features below these limits can sometimes be produced but with reduced consistency and yield. If a design requires features near or below the practical limit, the manufacturer should be consulted during the design phase, not after the drawing is finalized.
Distinguishing Critical and Non-Critical Dimensions
Critical dimensions should be identified separately from non-critical dimensions to support a realistic process capability assessment and stable yield rate.
The Importance of a Tiered Tolerance Strategy
A drawing that applies ±0.01 mm tolerance to every dimension is difficult to manufacture and unnecessarily expensive. A tiered approach is more practical:
Dimension Category | Recommended Tolerance | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Critical-to-function | Tightest, process-validated | Sealing surface width, locating hole positions |
Important | Moderate | Overall length and width, mounting slot positions |
Secondary | Loose | Decorative profile, non-functional chamfers |
This approach allows the manufacturer to focus process control on the dimensions that actually affect function, improving yield without compromising performance.
Capability Range and Material Options
Available materials include stainless steel 304, 316, and 316L, with typical thicknesses from 0.05 to 1.00 mm. The normal dimensional tolerance is ±0.01–±0.05 mm, depending on thickness, feature size, geometry, and etching conditions. Flatness is typically controlled within 0.02–0.05 mm, subject to the size and structural design of the sealing cover.
The cover plate can include:
- Mounting holes
- Slots
- Ventilation openings
- Alignment features
- Rounded corners
- Chamfered edges
- Custom sealing geometries
Surface Treatment Options
Passivation, electropolishing, polishing, brushing, and coating can be applied according to corrosion resistance and assembly requirements.
Treatment | Primary Benefit | Sealing-Specific Consideration |
|---|---|---|
Passivation | Corrosion resistance | Preserves surface conductivity |
Electropolishing | Micro-smoothing | Reduces contamination adhesion |
Polishing | Aesthetic finish | May affect adhesive wetting |
Brushing | Directional finish | Can create anisotropic surface energy |
Coating | Environmental protection | Must not compromise seal interface |
