How to Design a Compact Seed Phrase Engraving Plate
Designing a compact seed phrase backup plate requires more than reducing the external dimensions of a larger plate. The available writing area, character height, line pitch, hole position, edge clearance, engraving method, and material thickness must work together.
For this type of application, a practical reference size is approximately 63 × 47 mm, with a material thickness of approximately 2 mm. These dimensions provide a compact form factor while maintaining a rigid metal substrate suitable for manual engraving.

External Dimensions and Usable Writing Area
The external size of the plate is not equal to the usable engraving area. The design must reserve space for:
- The external perimeter and edge clearance
- Numbered line indicators
- The corner attachment hole
- Word separation and character spacing
- Possible stencil positioning
- Tolerance variation from cutting or stamping
For a small plate, the writing area should be evaluated using the actual character size rather than only the overall dimensions. A line that appears adequate in a CAD drawing may become difficult to use after accounting for engraving tool width, hand positioning, and the user’s viewing angle.
For a 24-word layout, the final design should confirm that the plate contains 24 clearly numbered positions. If the product configuration changes, the product title and description should be updated accordingly rather than assuming every version supports the same number of words.
Material Thickness and Handling
A 2 mm aluminum body provides a balance between low weight and handling rigidity. The plate is thick enough to be held during manual engraving without behaving like thin foil. It also remains relatively lightweight compared with many thicker stainless-steel backup plates.
Aluminum is generally easier to mark with a manual engraving pen than harder stainless-steel grades. However, engraving quality depends on alloy temper, tool geometry, applied force, engraving depth, and operator control. A shallow mark may be difficult to read, while excessive force can create burrs or local deformation.
Hole and Edge Design
The corner hole should be positioned with sufficient edge clearance to reduce the risk of deformation or breakout. The hole diameter should reflect the intended accessory, such as a keyring or lanyard, while preserving the structural area around the opening.
The hole edge should be checked for burrs after cutting or punching. Depending on the production route, secondary deburring may be required. For products handled directly by consumers, edge condition is a functional requirement, not merely a cosmetic consideration.
Engraving and Stencil Compatibility
The writing grid should be compatible with the intended engraving method. A letter stencil requires enough clearance for the stencil body and sufficient line spacing for the engraving tool. Letter height, stroke width, and character spacing should be considered together.
A practical design review should include:
- Actual stencil testing
- Manual engraving trials
- Inspection of the smallest characters
- Verification of word separation
- Evaluation of engraved legibility under normal lighting
- Confirmation that the numbered lines remain readable after engraving
The phrase compatible with a letter stencil is more accurate than includes a letter stencil unless the accessory is included in the package.
Engineering Validation
Before mass production, the design should be checked through a prototype or pilot batch. Key inspection items include overall length and width, material thickness, hole diameter, hole position, line spacing, edge burr condition, and surface flatness.
For a precision metal supplier, the selected manufacturing process should be based on the drawing tolerance, production volume, required surface finish, and cost target. Laser cutting, stamping, chemical etching, or a combined process may each be appropriate in different situations.
