How to Engrave a Seed Phrase on a Stainless Steel Plate

Step 1: Confirm the Plate Layout

Before engraving, confirm that the plate has enough space for the intended recovery phrase length. A 12-word, 18-word, or 24-word phrase requires different layout planning.

A properly designed seed phrase plate should provide:

  • Clearly numbered rows
  • Sufficient spacing between words
  • Adequate character width
  • A surface compatible with the selected engraving method
  • A separate note area if required
  • Clear visual separation between adjacent lines

An extended stainless steel seed phrase plate can provide more space for each word and reduce the risk of crowded characters.

Step 2: Prepare the Marking Method

A manual engraving pen is suitable for basic user-operated marking when the objective is to create readable permanent characters on a metal surface. The actual result depends on:

  • Stainless steel grade
  • Surface hardness
  • Plate thickness
  • Pen tip geometry
  • Operator pressure
  • Character height
  • Engraving depth
  • Surface finish

The operator should first test the engraving pen on a non-critical area or sample coupon. This helps determine the required pressure and movement speed before marking the recovery phrase.

Step 3: Use a Letter Stencil

A reusable stainless steel letter stencil helps standardize character shape and spacing. Place the stencil over the designated row and align it with the plate reference marks.

During stencil positioning, check:

  1. The character baseline is parallel to the numbered line.
  1. The word remains inside the intended engraving area.
  1. The stencil does not shift during marking.
  1. The character sequence matches the original phrase.
  1. Similar-looking characters are clearly distinguishable.

The stencil improves consistency, but it does not eliminate the need for final inspection.

Step 4: Maintain Word Order

The recovery phrase must be recorded in the original order. Each word should be engraved only in its corresponding numbered position.

A practical workflow is to mark one word at a time, then compare it with the source phrase before moving to the next row. Avoid engraving the entire plate from memory.

For a 24-word recovery phrase, the operator should use a two-person verification process only if the second person is fully trusted and the phrase can remain private. In many cases, a single operator and a careful self-check are preferable because exposure of the phrase creates a security risk.

Step 5: Inspect the Finished Characters

After engraving, inspect the plate under adequate lighting. Check for:

  • Missing letters
  • Incorrect word order
  • Incomplete strokes
  • Excessive burrs
  • Overlapping characters
  • Unclear letter depth
  • Accidental marks outside the intended area

If a character is difficult to read, it should be corrected before the plate is stored. The final plate should be compared directly with the wallet-generated recovery phrase.

Manufacturing Considerations for Custom Versions

For manufacturers developing a custom seed phrase plate, the design may be produced by chemical etching, laser cutting, laser marking, CNC machining, or stamping.

Chemical etching is useful for thin stainless steel parts requiring fine features, repeatable lettering, and low mechanical stress. Since the process is subtractive and does not introduce significant mechanical deformation, it can reduce residual stress compared with some forming operations.

Laser marking can provide high-resolution text and variable data, while laser cutting is more suitable for the external profile, slots, apertures, and stencil geometry. Stamping may be efficient for higher-volume production but requires careful control of die clearance, burr height, material hardness, and dimensional tolerance.

The appropriate process depends on:

  • Material grade
  • Thickness
  • Character size
  • Required marking depth
  • Edge tolerance
  • Surface finish
  • Annual volume
  • Inspection requirements
