Metal vs Paper Seed Phrase Backup: What Should You Consider?

Paper is vulnerable to common environmental factors such as humidity, water contact, tearing, folding, ink fading, and abrasion. These risks may become more serious when the paper backup is stored for many years or moved between locations.
A stainless steel plate has a more stable physical structure. It does not tear like paper, and engraved characters do not fade in the same way as ink. However, metal should not be treated as automatically indestructible. The final performance depends on steel grade, thickness, marking method, corrosion conditions, and heat exposure.
For technical accuracy, a product should identify the actual material specification where possible. “Stainless steel” is a general material description. Different grades have different corrosion resistance, hardness, magnetic properties, and forming characteristics.
Readability and Character Spacing
Readability is one of the most important requirements for a recovery phrase backup. A word that cannot be identified with confidence may prevent successful wallet restoration.

Neither paper nor metal protects a recovery phrase if an unauthorized person can access it. A stainless steel plate can improve physical durability, but the phrase remains sensitive information.
The backup should be:

- Kept in a private location
- Protected from casual access
- Excluded from photographs and cloud records
- Checked periodically for legibility without exposing it unnecessarily
A backup plate should not include the wallet PIN, exchange password, email password, or other unnecessary credentials unless the security design specifically requires it. Additional information can increase the impact of unauthorized access.

Stamping becomes more attractive at higher production volumes, provided the tooling cost, burr control, springback, and dimensional tolerance are acceptable.

Practical Conclusion
Paper remains convenient for immediate recording. A stainless steel plate is more suitable when the user prioritizes a rigid physical format, engraved legibility, and long-term offline storage.
A seed phrase plate with a reusable letter stencil and engraving pen combines the storage surface with basic marking tools. This can reduce the need for the customer to source a separate template or engraving instrument.
