What Do You Need to Make a DIY Metal Seed Phrase Backup?
1. Stainless Steel Backup Plate
The plate is the physical storage surface for the recovery phrase. A suitable plate should have sufficient stiffness, a stable surface, and a layout that supports the required number of words.
For a multi-format product, the layout may support:
- 12-word recovery phrases
- 18-word recovery phrases
- 24-word recovery phrases
- Numbered lines
- A separate note area
- Extended spacing for clearer engraving
Plate thickness should be selected according to stiffness, handling requirements, manufacturing process, and target cost. A thicker plate is not automatically better if it creates unnecessary weight or affects the engraving process.
2. Reusable Letter Stencil
A letter stencil helps the user form consistent characters. For a seed phrase kit, the stencil may include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and common symbols.
The stencil design should consider:
- Character legibility
- Minimum bridge width
- Aperture geometry
- Alignment marks
- Material thickness
- Ease of cleaning and reuse

Laser cutting can produce the external plate geometry and stencil openings with flexible prototype economics. Stamping is appropriate for higher-volume production when tooling amortization is justified. CNC machining may be selected when deeper engraving, three-dimensional features, or tighter local tolerances are required.

- Material certification
- Flatness requirements
- Burr and edge-break requirements
- Character repeatability
- Surface treatment
- Dimensional inspection
- Yield rate
- Packaging protection
- Lot traceability
